New York City Eateries Turn BYOB
In NYC this summer, don’t bother asking for the wine list. In response to the slimming wallets of restaurant frequenters, many New York City eateries have traded in their liquor licenses for BYOB policies. While maintaining a liquor license often requires tiresome paperwork and fees, going BYOB avoids the hassles of liquor licensing and appeals to drinkers who can no longer afford to order off the wine list. At BYOB establishments, customers can stop by the neighborhood deli or liquor store to pick up a bottle of wine in their price range before heading out for a bite to eat. Some BYOBs charge a small corking fee, but many will let their customers drink cheap wine in peace. BYOB restaurants hope this money-saving tool will attract a larger, financially mindful crowd. They even anticipate some of the money saved by BYOB customers will be spent on pricier food.
